A vital piece of equipment that the rider must wear is a riding helmet, many riding schools insist all riders, regardless of their ability, wear a riding helmet. You will even see riders wearing helmets in professional sports such as horse racing and dressage, even at such a high level of experience and understanding you are still riding a wild animal and this animal can be startled and accidents may happen.
Reins are important to help direct the horse both in direction and speed, pulling back on the reins will normally bring the horse to a stop or at very least slow them down. There are plenty of different types of reins and bridles available which may vary depending on the horse or the riding style.
There are other equipment that may not be vital but depending on the horse such as wearing blinders if the horse is nervous which can happen when horses are ridden on roads and may spook if they encounter other road users. There are a lot of other horse equipment that may be needed for when they are not being ridden such as blankets or rugs that keep them warm during winter, these are needed more for horses that are kept in fields rather than stables.

Other preventable head injuries occur when a horse throws its head against yours in gladness at your arrival, when a horse kicks or starts an altercation with another horse, and when a person is ‘bumped’ by a horse into a wall, fence, or vehicle. As large and powerful as horses are, it doesn’t take much for them to become dangerous, even when it is not their intention!
The United States Equestrian Federation & Barn Regulations
The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is the governing body that determines the dress and other requirements for hunter, jumper, hunt seat equitation, dressage, and other equine competitions. Currently, all riders must wear an ASTM/SEI certified helmet when competing in hunt seat equitation, hunter, jumper, hunter hack, and any other classes that involve jumping. All riders under the age of 18 must wear am ASTM/SEI approved helmet in any hunt seat discipline. While not always required, helmets are permitted as optional headgear at all sanctioned horse shows.
Cross-country riders are required to wear approved helmets and safety vests, due to the rugged nature of their sport. Nearly all sanctioned endurance-riding events require an approved helmet. Riding helmets are now even worn in some dressage classes. Although this is not required, it is certainly safer. Most barns require the use of an approved helmet whenever a person rides a horse, both for safety and insurance reasons.
Certified Safe
For a helmet to become ASTM/SEI certified, it must pass rigorous tests designed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and conducted by the Safety Equipment Institute (SEI). Approved helmets exhibit an ASTM F-1163-04/SEI certification sticker.
Approved helmets are made from a hard plastic or rosin shell and offer substantial padding on the inside and an attached, adjustable harness to provide a secure, safe, and comfortable fit. Many helmets today feature a sun visor and ventilation strips. Moisture-wicking materials make these helmets far more comfortable. For anyone who intends to ride horses, an ASTM/SEI approved helmet is a necessity.
Finding The Right Fit
Sizing a helmet is simply a matter of measuring the circumference of the widest part of your head, at the forehead level. Sizing charts are available online, using metric and standard measurements, to provide riders with a well-fitting riding helmet. Of course, a riding helmet must fit properly to be effective. Too loose, and it can cause more harm than it will prevent. Too tight and, well, that one’s pretty obvious!
Choosing The Right Style
The style of helmet selected depends largely upon the style of riding being done. If the more rugged and risky forms of riding are to be pursued, a heavier duty, better protecting helmet is called for. In the show ring, style must be combined with function to maintain the required image of form and elegance. Whichever direction you intend to go with your riding activities, the crucial point is to wear a properly fitting, ASTM/SEI approved helmet whenever you are working around horses. Bicycle helmets simply will not provide adequate protection.

Choosing the right horse riding clothing
We’ll all have seen movies with characters riding on horseback, whether it’s a western or a period drama it seems that riding a horse is often the most dramatic method of transport. The trouble is that they can often present a false image of what clothing is best for horse riding and if emulated in real life can have bad consequences from discomfort to serious injuries.
Your riding style may dictate different fashions but essentially the clothing you’ll be wearing will be similar.
Riding Jodhpurs, Breeches or Jeans
Typically western style riding is associated with wearing jeans, it’s important not to wear loose jeans as these can cause nasty chaffing. Western riding is typically associated with chaps too, made of leather these do well to protect against the elements but also any brush or branches you may encounter. English riding is often associated with jodhpurs which are fitted trousers with a cuff near the ankle. This allows the wearer to wear shorter boots as opposed to knee high riding boots.

Shirts, Jackets and coats
For the upper body it’s normal to wear a long sleeve shirt to protect the rider from the sun, especially in hotter climates. For cold weather conditions a jacket or coat may be more suitable to wear over any usual garments. With coats and jackets it’s important to keep them closed/buttoned up and that you are able to move freely so you are able to keep control. It’s advised to refrain from short sleeved shirts or t-shirts as these don’t provide protection to the arms from objects or brush.
Footwear and horse riding boots
Footwear is important and careful consideration needs to be taken with regards to the sole of the shoe or boot. Flat shoes are not advised as in the event of some sort of accident then your foot could slip through the stirrup and get your leg caught. The solution is to go for a proper horse riding boot or cowboy boot with a defined heel of around 1 inch; this would keep your feet in the correct position preventing your foot becoming caught.
Headwear for protection and safety
Typically western styles depicted in TV and film show horse riders wearing cowboy hats and whilst this protects the rider’s head and neck form the sun it becomes pretty ineffective in the event of an accident or a fall. New riders and experienced riders alike will normally wear a riding helmet; make sure that they are fully certified to current standards when buying.
