Big Bear Brings Vacationers the Ultimate Experience Any Season of the Year
Article by Caitlin Moore
Southern California is known for many things; sunshine, frivolity, great clothes…everyone knows there are pretty beaches and pretty people, but did you know there’s pretty good skiing, too? Big Bear is approximately 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles in the San Bernardino Mountains and contains two fabulous resorts that attract fun-loving visitors all year round. This is the place to ski, hike and so much more – all with the laid-back attitude that this rad region pulls off so well.
It’s possible to get your adrenaline pumping in about a thousand different ways here. Skiing and snowboarding are givens during the cold weather months thanks to plenty of acreage and seven top-notch terrain parks that can both start beginners on the right foot and challenge even the pros. Two resorts and all the peaks and lifts they entail are accessible under the same ticket, and if you just want to have some silly fun there are places to tube and build snowmen, too.
The Alpine Slide is another hot option, as it provides an authentic bobsled experience complete with high speeds and cement tracks. Also in the winter, usually beginning around early November, horseback riding through the snowy forest, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and taking a carriage tour are equally satisfying pursuits that expose visitors to a whole new side of California.
As for what you might expect in terms of natural surroundings, stop by Big Bear during the warm weather months to be just as dazzled by the ways that Mother Nature and resort offerings can seamlessly come together. Hiking, biking, climbing, boating, fishing, golfing and playing tennis provide the basic idea of what a spring, summer or fall day could contain. Big Bear Lake and its dozen miles of shoreline provide a calming effect that only the water can have. A game of volleyball or horseshoes, a spin on a motorboat or just a refreshing dip into the clear blue water can all erase the tension that months of overwork have brought about.
A good sign that Big Bear is indeed a happening place to be is that a number of special events and festivals fill the calendar. An International Film Festival, May’s Spring Air Fair, Oktoberfest and tons of Holiday season events mean that it’s likely visitors will stumble upon something fun and interesting to see and do even apart from the regular diversions already mentioned. Nightly entertainment is another constant, as are an array of unique shopping options and plenty of mouth-watering dining establishments. This is California, after all, where no appetite need go ignored.
No matter which season you choose to visit (many people end up coming back to see Big Bear again, dressed a little differently), the best way to squeeze every drop of enjoyment from this multi-faceted location is to stay somewhere equally accommodating. Specifically, this would mean reserving a vacation home for you and your traveling companions – one that is roomy, friendly and oh-so-convenient to the magic of the mountain.
Big Bear Vacation Rentals can be anything you want them to be (large, small, luxurious, simple) and they tend to mirror this destination itself. They look good in any season and are adept at pleasing a number of different temperaments. With amenities like kitchens, Jacuzzi tubs, entertainment centers, proximity to the lifts, log fireplaces and the hard-to-replicate aura of being tucked away into the woods you may find it hard to leave at the end of your stay.
Check it out by going online and perusing the various vacation rental listings. Big Bear lodges and cabins are plentiful and popular as well, so plan ahead to reserve your top choice. And, if the one you want happens to be taken already, remember that there’s always next season.

Coastal Communities for Fishing, Surfing and Boating
Article by Howard Giske
Living on the beach in general is a lot of fun, especially when it is warm outside. If one is able to, it is a pleasant idea to live in various Coastal real estate all around the country, particularly in the Sun Belt areas of California, Florida, Texas, and Hawaii.
For example, Venice Ca. is a community known for its surfing ambience. Venice has been part of Los Angeles since 1925, but it still has a separate identity as a community. It has three miles of beaches and a boardwalk, and there’s a lot of outdoor entertainment. Then there is muscle beach, where often body builders can be seen lifting weights and developing their physique. The population of Venice area is about 39,000 and it is located 3 miles south of Santa Monica, and 17 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Venice is also only a short 30 miles or so boat ride to Carolina Island, much of it closed off to development in a Nature Preserve.
Similar warm conditions, though not quite as exciting for surfers can be found in the Corpus Christi metropolitan area is made up of several different communities. Corpus Christi is a medium size city off the Gulf of Mexico, on Corpus Christi Bay, about 30 miles north of Mexico. Several exclusive communities on the coast are especially desirable. North Padre Island has an 18-hole golf course and country club, and Mediterranean style homes with stucco and ceramic tile roofs. There are homes and condos on the island feature boat slips just out their back doors where one can sail through canals to the Gulf of Mexico. Flour Bluff is a quaint community located between Corpus Christi and North Padre Island. There is also the charming Rockport-Fulton.
Other attractions are the permanent docking of the “Ships of Christopher Columbus”, which were constructed to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. These reproductions were built by Spain and after touring U.S. ports, the ships arrived in Corpus Christi in 1993. In downtown Corpus Christi, you can choose from restaurants serving seafood, authentic Mexican food and Cajun foods. There’s something for everyone. Residents enjoy bike riding by the bay, horseback riding, swimming, surfing, sailing, windsurfing and more. Best of all, much of the housing in the Corpus Christi area is very affordable compared to expensive resort and winter communities in Florida and California.
Finally, probably the ultimate coastal getaway is to the fishing and surfing paradise of the island of Kauai in Hawaii. A mountainous interior of this island, covered with rain forests makes sure that all the 60,000 inhabitants of this 550 square mile island live near to the sea. Rainfall ranges from 19 inches on the dry western shore to 48 inches on the eastern shore near the town of Kapa’a, to some of the highest rainfall per year on the peak of Wai’ale’ale. No structure can be built higher than about four stories tall, so don’t expect to see huge condos here. The boating, the kayaking, the fishing and the surfing are magnificent.

Cabin Rentals Make Family Vacations Special
Article by Rich Herman
Treat you and your family to a cabin rental on your next vacation or weekend getaway. Imagine yourself relaxing for a moment, laying in a hammock outside of your beautiful log or cedar cabin. You have plenty of space around you and you are enjoying the fresh air and magnificent scenery, instead of looking out at all of the cars jammed into the parking lot of the hotel. Can you picture yourself beginning to unwind now that you are away from the office and the fast pace of city life? There is something special about renting a cabin for your vacation. You will be glad that you did, and your kids will talk about it for years. We rented a log cabin on our last vacation, and our kids still think that it was the neatest place that we ever stayed.
Cabin rentals come in all shapes and sizes. Choose from rustic pioneer cabins or lookout towers, small cozy log or cedar cabins, or opt for a large luxurious cabin or vacation home. Cabins range from small 1-bedroom cabins to large cabins with 10, 12 or more bedrooms. Whether you are looking for a small intimate cabin for two or something that can accommodate dozens of family members or friends the right cabin is waiting for you. Cabin rentals are available throughout the United States. Often, located in out-of-the-way places with magnificent scenery, cabins provide a great alternative to an ordinary hotel stay, and there are cabin rentals that fit any budget.
Here are some top cabin rental locations to consider for your next family vacation or getaway. Each of these areas offer a wide selection of cabin rentals, and plenty of fun for the entire family.
Big Bear Cabins – Big Bear Lake, California is a four seasons resort community surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest. It is approximately 80 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California. The area offers a wide range of cabin rentals, and vacation rentals for year-round family fun. Activities include boating and water sports, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, golfing, skiing, snowboarding and many other fun family activities.
Smoky Mountain Cabins – The Great Smoky Mountains are a major mountain range in the southern part of the Appalachian Mountains. Also called the Smoky Mountains or the Smokies, they straddle the border between Tennessee and North Carolina, and attract millions of visitors each
year. There are many wonderful cabins and cabin rentals available throughout the Smoky
Mountains. Both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are two great communities that offer a nice selection of cabin rentals. While you are in the area visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, ride the country’s largest aerial tram to the top of Ober Gatlinburg, and visit the famous Dollywood Theme Park.
Branson Cabins – Branson, Missouri is nestled in the beautiful Ozark Mountains not far from Table Rock Lake. The area offers plenty of fun for the entire family. If you enjoy the outdoors there is fishing, boating and other water sports, hiking, horseback riding, and golf. While you are in the area be sure and visit the famous Silver Dollar City Theme Park, and take in some shows in Branson. It will be a trip that the entire family enjoys, and there are many good cabin rentals available in this area.
As I mentioned, there are cabin rentals available throughout the United States and these come in all shapes, sizes and price ranges. I have mentioned just a few of the more popular spots here to give you some ideas for your next family vacation. Take the time to create lasting memories for you and your children. Make your next trip extra special by renting a cabin – you will be glad that you did!

Seeing the Hawaiian Islands on a Cruise
Article by Denise Walker
Hawaiian Island cruises are a fantastic way to get away and force yourself to relax. Not only are you aboard a ship where everything is taken care of, but you’re on “island time” as well. No worries!
Those are two of the main attractions to cruising Hawaii–besides the fabulous weather and scenery, of course. There are so many cruise options to and within the Hawaiian Islands, though, it can be a dizzying prospect to decide which one you want.
Time is perhaps your first consideration. The Hawaiian Islands themselves are big, and they are in the middle of an even bigger ocean. They are the most isolated land mass in the world, which means your first decision is going to be: fly there, or cruise there?
A cruise to Hawaii departing from Los Angeles, San Diego, or even Mexico will run between 10 to 14 days, with stops on at least two islands, usually more. You will have several days at sea sailing to and fro, so check out the amenities on your ship before you go and decide how you want to spend your time.
As with most cruise ships, you can elect to lie out on deck all day reading the final Harry Potter installment, or be as active as you like. Most cruise ships have workout rooms or even full fitness centers. Some also have rock climbing walls, and one even has an ice skating rink!
Once in Hawaii, shore excursions will take you to the island. You can pre-arrange a shore activity, such as a luau, a round of golf, horseback riding, snorkeling, or more. You might visit the Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu, or view the fabulous Kilauea volcano as it continues its eruption on the Big Island.
Another option is to fly to Hawaii, board your ship, and spend your time cruising between the islands. The waters are generally calmer than they are out on the Pacific, so if seasickness has ever bothered you, this might be the way to go. The cruise ships are large enough that few people are bothered by the waves out on the ocean, but a few are.
After arriving in Hawaii (usually Honolulu) you’ll board your ship and begin your cruise. With less time spent getting to Hawaii, you can spend more time enjoying the islands. Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) is currently the only large-ship operator to cruise inter-island. They sail two ships on the inter-island route, the Pride of Aloha and the Pride of America. These are 7-day excursions, departing from and arriving back in Honolulu.
Consider the season you want to cruise, as well. Christmas and the summer holiday season are in highest demand, with few discounts available. Also, your ship is likely to be booked to capacity. Between Thanksgiving and mid-December is the best time to find bargains, and shoulder season is typically September and October.
No matter when you go you’ll find a cruise to Hawaii a very relaxing experience. You only have to pack once, but can visit a whole array of destinations. You’ll get the same bed every night, faultless service and outstanding food. A Hawaiian island cruise will let you pack the sandals but leave your worries at home.

Camping at Yosemite National Park
Article by Jeff Beckman
One of the crown jewels of the National Park System, Yosemite National Park is a must see for the camper, backpacker, or anyone who appreciates the outdoors. Yosemite National Park is located in the central Sierra Nevada of California and lies 150 miles east of San Francisco and only a six-hour drive from Los Angeles. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is internationally recognized for its spectacular granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves, and biological diversity. The 750,000-acre, 1,200 square-mile park contains thousands of lakes and ponds, 1600 miles of streams, 800 miles of hiking trails, and 350 miles of roads. Two federally designated wild and scenic rivers, the Merced and Tuolumne, begin within Yosemite’s borders and flow west into California’s Central Valley. Annual park visitation exceeds 3.5 million, with most visitor use concentrated in the seven square mile area of Yosemite Valley.
Things to Do
Yosemite offers a wide array of outdoor activities including hiking, biking, horseback riding, birdwatching, water activities, stargazing, and rock climbing. The spectacular scenery is also very popular for artists and photographers. The hiking trails range from low impact paths around the Yosemite Valley to strenuous climbs alongside some of the most breathtaking waterfalls you will ever see. The best known hike in Yosemite is hiking to the top of the famed Half Dome. It is approximately 15 miles (roundtrip) and you gain nearly 5,000 feet of altitude on your way up. While making your way to the top, you will have magnificent views of the Vernal and Nevada falls, and once you achieve the summit, an amazing view of the valley below. The final 400 feet of the climb requires the use of a cable to negotiate the steep ascent. Plan on this hike taking all day (10 – 12 hours), and for many, the next couple days to recover.
If you are not quite ready for hiking through Yosemite, you can take a two hour bus tour conducted by the National Park Service or enjoy the 12 miles of bike trails that wind around the Valley. There are several short and relatively easy trails where you can view and feel the spray from some of the highest waterfalls in North America. You can also spend time in the Ranger Stations learning about the history and wildlife, and even enjoy some ice cream at the general store.
The winter months also have plenty of activities for the whole family. The Badger Pass Ski Area has downhill and cross country skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. For the more adventurous, there are backcountry ski tours with the Yosemite Mountaineering School. Rental equipment is also available.
Lodging
Yosemite also offers a variety of lodging options. The campgrounds are outstanding with electricity at some sites for RV or trailer campers. There are shuttle buses that travel all around the valley so it is very easy to go from the camping areas to the village or other locations. For a little more structure, you can stay in canvas tents in Curry Village. And if you prefer the comforts of home, there are a number of lodges and hotels in the Park. Getting a campsite can be a challenge, as most of the reservations are filled on the first day they become available. Campground reservations are available in blocks of one month at a time, up to five months in advance, on the 15th of each month at 7 am Pacific time. You can go to http://www.recreation.gov, or call 877-444-6777 or 518-885-3639 from outside the US or Canada.

Families enjoy vacations at San Diego’s Warner Springs
Article by Cary Ordway
Americans once went to Mexico for their fortune, opposite of how it is today. In fact, Warner Springs Ranch founder John Warner was awarded a 48,000-square-acre land grant just for becoming a Mexican citizen.
Of course, Warner had a little pull: he had married Anita Gale, who was raised as a ward of the soon-to-be governor of California. For a 37-year-old Connecticut native, Warner had done well for himself.
Warner’s little piece of Mexico – dubbed Valle de San Jose – was renamed Warner’s Ranch and, by the late 1840′s, this idyllic stretch of property became the only inhabited stopping place for wagon trains and Butterfield stagecoaches between New Mexico and Los Angeles. The ranch was located in eastern San Diego County and was once visited by famous stagecoach travelers including President Teddy Roosevelt. Grant, and many other notables.
One of the main attractions in those days was the hot mineral springs that were included in Warner’s little gift from the Mexican government. One can only imagine how good this early-day hot tub felt for those tired stagecoach travelers after a hard day of fighting Indians or just riding in a rickety wagon on washboard roads. The California Spa experience had been born.
Somewhere along the way, Warner’s oasis became known as Warner Springs Ranch and its proximity to Los Angeles – just a hundred miles or so – made it popular with Hollywood stars such as Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Gary Cooper, Jean Harlow, Clark Gable, John Wayne and Bing Crosby. Clearly, Warner Springs Ranch had passed the test of time, and that has since led to several generations of California families who have grown up enjoying their vacations in Warner Springs.
Whether coming from San Diego or points north, the drive to Warner Springs Ranch takes you through and around 6000-foot mountain ranges, across high-desert plateaus and along winding rivers and streams – which, thanks to this winter’s rains, actually have water in them. It’s a pleasant drive far away from the bustle of the city and light-years apart from the Southern California beach experience that is, as the crow flies, about 40 miles away.
At the end of your journey is the ranch, nestled in the foothills of Palomar Mountain. For a resort offering 240 cottages, we noticed on a recent visit that it doesn’t seem nearly that expansive from the road. Warner Springs Ranch really is like a small town by the side of the road that doesn’t offer much of a hint about what’s inside this gated community. But just inside the gates, we could immediately see there was a lot to see and do right on the ranch property.
First stop was our adobe cottage. Obviously built many decades ago, this house included a spacious living room area with cathedral ceilings and a couch that folded out into a double bed. The thick adobe walls – about two feet wide measuring the window insets – keep these units cool year around, but a stone fireplace was at the ready. Adjacent to the living room area was a bedroom and bath area. Nothing in our unit was particularly fancy and many might consider the accommodations and furnishings rather rustic. But that’s part of the charm of visiting a historic ranch.
Right in the center of it all is the hot springs area, which has a kind of historical flavor. The water is piped down to a 100-by-48-foot pool where the temperature is kept at a steady 104 degrees. Within minutes of our arrival we were joining another few dozen guests relaxing and luxuriating in the soothing waters. This pool just seemed more civilized that many of the wilderness hot springs we have come across. Private changing rooms were at pool’s edge and there was none of the nudity you often find in mineral springs that are more remote.
Next to the mineral pool is a standard pool of about the same size, and heated to between 75 and 85 degrees year-round. But there is much more to do at Warner Springs Ranch than soak or swim – for the active vacationer, there are many more attractions including a 6,892-yard, par 72 golf course, several tennis courts – a pro is on duty to give lessons – and another major part of the ranch, horseback riding.
While we didn’t get a chance to saddle up during our brief visit, there are regular rides along an extensive system of trails, each offering different views of the valley and neighboring mountains. One of those trails is the Pacific Crest Trail, where we did set out on foot for an afternoon, envisioning what it must be like to hike this trail from the Canadian border all the way to Mexico. As Arnold would say, our little hike was more the girlie-man version of the PCT, but none the less scenic and seemingly just as remote. The advantage, of course, was we would sleep in our cozy cottage and dine in style at the resort’s Anza Dining Room.
The Anza seems to be the social center of the resort. As mentioned previously, generations of Californians have been coming to Warner Springs Ranch and many of the cottages are privately owned, encouraging frequent trips back to the ranch. Sit down for dinner in the Anza and you get the feeling that most people in the room are friends or vacation acquaintances. On a given Saturday night it’s not a quiet, romantic dinner spot – the room is more like a dining hall – but the food is expertly prepared, and the buffet option loads you up with several gourmet entries for under .
Near the Anza is the Cantina, a colorful bar located in the actual adobe where John Warner lived when he took possession of the ranch. The only nightlife in the area, the Cantina comes alive with bands and entertainers on any given Saturday night.
If you are able to stay any length of time, there are many attractions in the area that are either adjacent to the ranch or within easy driving distance. Just a couple of miles from the ranch is the Warner Springs Airport where you can go up in a glider. The thermals over the ranch area provide a significant lift for the gliders operating out of the Warner Springs airport and, on weekends, it’s not uncommon to see flight-after-flight of sailplanes taking tourists up for a quick look at the valley from an engine-less aircraft. The gliders can seat two guests side-by-side.
Julian is a historic gold mining town that is less than an hour’s drive from Warner Springs. A frequent getaway for San Diego area residents, Julian offers an Old West main street with colorful shops, restaurants and old-time bars. In summer, western gunfights are sometimes staged on Main Street.
In fact, Warner Springs and Julian are great bookends for California’s history – a visit to this part of San Diego County will make you wish you’d gotten your own little 48,000-acre piece of this gorgeous California countryside.
