Arizona Wine Trail
Some of the best wine on the west coast isn’t made in California. Really! There are a healthy number of wineries in Arizona, making some of the best wine you’ve ever tasted. Arizona wine isn’t as publicized as the stuff made in California, but it’s a well kept secret. Yes, grapes grow in a state primarily known for desert. Maybe the plan is for everyone to think wine can’t be made in a state associated with 110 degree heat, and then they give you a glass of this liquid sunshine, and you couldn’t be any more amazed by it.
I’ll tell you about a couple of wine trails in Arizona; one in the north, and one in the south. In southern Arizona, we have the Sonoita Wine Trail. Sonoita, a small community in far southern Arizona, has several great wineries, 10 of which are on the trail. Callaghan Vineyards is the middle stop on the trail. They have several red wines, including a Cabernet 2008 with hints of red pepper. Charron Vineyards makes a nice Arizona wine, a white Merlot, but it’s the only one they make. They’re pondering adding a red wine to the mix, but you’ll have to wait at least two years to taste it.
In northern Arizona lies Cottonwood, a community about halfway between Prescott and Flagstaff. The Verde Valley Wine Trail takes travelers through the region, which has exploded with wineries in the past decade or so. There is some great Arizona wine to be had here. Alcantara Vineyards, located in Verde Valley, makes several different varieties of wines. The vineyard is quite popular, which is why they’ve sold out of most of their wines for the season. One of the few they have left, a 2008 Pinot Grigio, is blended with citrus, figs and pears. The vineyard recommends it be served with appetizers.
So, the cat’s out of the bag. Stop following the herd to Napa and head to Arizona to get some surprisingly good wine. The high altitude gives the wine a different flavor, and the unique climate allows the vineyards to experiment with different fruits and spices to give the wines proper embellishment. Arizona wine is good wine. It’s just that not too many people know about it. Hopefully that changes after this. There are a couple of good wine trails to navigate for wine aficionados, so raise your glass and start tasting.
Speaking of raising a glass, have you ever thought about toasting to your future after a Wedding at a vineyard? Arizona offers several winery weddings. The Windmill Winery in Florence has lakeside ceremonies with mountain views and a horse drawn carriage.
There are two near Prescott: Granite Creek Winery in Chino Valley is located at 4,600 feet surrounded by granite peaks. Juniper Well Ranch which is 25 minutes from Prescott is not only a vineyard, but also boards horses. Juniper Well Ranch also has 4 rental cabins surrounded by the Prescott National Forest.
About 30 miles from Sedona in Cornville is Page Springs Cellars. Ceremonies there are located on the deck overlooking Oak Creek. If you need relaxing, you can get a massage under a tent right in the vineyard!
Sonoita Vineyards in Elgin is the oldest vineyard in Arizona. It has a very picturesque setting as it is surrounded on 3 sides by mountains.
I am a 60 year old married man in Georgia who really enjoys life. My wife and I have been married 39 years and plan to add a few more to that! We both love wine and love to travel. We have two awesome sons, two daughters-in-law that we love and four grand-kids. I truly enjoy United States Wines better than the imported wines, though there are some very good imported wines. It’s our goal to visit as many American wineries as we can. We have been fortunate enough to visit wineries in several states over the years.
